Bill Murphy The One Tank Trip Man
Bill Murphy was born and raised in New York City, but also lived in Monterey, California. His current whereabouts are unknown to me, although he recently answered one of my e-mails. He moved to Florida in 1985, and was a television celebrity for Fox 13 in Tampa, WTVT. He retired in early 2008.
His brief bio on the blog he used to keep at Fox 13 says that he has one daughter, 2 cats and ants. He was trying to get rid of the ants.He plays tennis, snow skis, roller blades and plays disc golf. At Fox 13 he did live shots during "Good Day", "One Tank Trips", "Murphy At The Movies". He also anchored the weekend morning shows. He says in his next life he'd like to know how to juggle and yodel. During his time with Fox 13 he wrote three lighthearted books about Florida day trips. Each book covers 52 places that could be visited with one tank of gas. Each entry is brief but information packed. His books are still good guides today. His books were partially the inspiration for the Florida day trips and one tank trips section of Florida Backroads Travel. ABOUT BILL'S FLORIDA BOOKS I am only going to list the three Florida themed books of which I am aware: - (1999) One Tank Trips
- (2001) More One Tank Trips
- (2004) Volume 3 One Tank Trips
As mentioned earlier, each paperback book has 52 destinations for you to visit, ranging from horse retirement farms to wineries and zoos. It is worth owning all three books, because he does not repeat himself and most of the information is still useful today. Most of Bill's books are available either new or used at this direct link: Bill Murphy at Amazon.com The books can also be ordered from his former employer, WTVT Channel 13 in Tampa.
