Road Scholar
Used To Be Exploritas and Elderhostel

Road Scholar was known until June 2010 as Exploritas. Before that it was known (until late 2009) as Elderhostel. It is the world's largest not-for-profit educational travel organization for adults established in 1975.

Elderhostel renamed its programs using a combination of "explore" and "Veritas", the Latin word for "truth." The motto of the new organization is still the same, "Adventures in Lifelong Learning".

For some reason, they changed the name again from Exploritas to Road Scholar. Maybe this name will stick.

This organization offers more than 8,000 learning adventures every year. Their programs are held in all 50 U.S. states and in over 90 countries around the world. Over 160,000 people enroll in these programs every year.

Drawing on local and national experts, participants in these programs benefit from deep and unique learning opportunities, from cultural tours and study cruises to walking, biking and more.

In the early days of Elderhostel, program attendees stayed in dormitory rooms reminiscent of bare-bones hostels. In more recent years, this spartan lodging has evolved into comfortable hotels, inns and other more typical accommodations.

The programs last from one day to several weeks. The programs are designed with an educational focus. The programs are created to provide special access to places and events that most tourists can't arrange by themselves.

Programs include Days of Discovery in cities and towns in the United States, multi-day programs in the U.S. and Canada, and international programs ranging from five days in one city to several-weeks traveling through numerous countries, and Adventures Afloat cruises on ocean liners, small ships and riverboats.

Elderhostel began as an organization to help people age 60 and older to enjoy educational travel. In the 1990s it reduced its minimum age to 55. Now that Road Scholar is here, any reference to age has been eliminated except to say that the programs are intended for adults.

The organization has connections with educators and local “insiders” all around the world. They are good at world’s natural wonders and many cultures in a way that is difficult to do on your own.
