Florida Bluegrass and Folk Music
Florida music festivals are sometimes the only entertainment taking place outdoors in the hot humid Florida summers.Many times they are held at night to make conditions tolerable for music lovers. In the winter months there are music festivals where you can bundle up and sit by the campfire and listen to pickin' and grinnin' until the wee hours. The Florida Folk Festival is the granddaddy of all Florida folk music festivals. It is celebrated every year on Memorial Day weekend at Stephen Foster State Park in White Springs. The first Florida Folk Festival was held in 1953, and has been enjoyed by Floridians and visitors alike without missing a year since. The three day festival features folk music and folk dance, storytelling, art and craft displays and lots of food, all on the beautiful grounds of one of Florida's nicest state parks. From fiddle tunes to delicious pies and other tasty treats, Florida's cultural heritage is celebrated and tells the stories of the lives of generations of Florida families and communities since the state began to be settled in the 1800's. Throughout the Memorial Day weekend more than 300 performances give voice and meaning to Florida’s heritage. Other music festivals are held in most of Florida's regions over the year. During the summer months there are very few art festivals, but music transcends the weather. You can usually find an outdoors music event on even the hottest summer days or coldest winter days.
