My Boyhood Memories of Marineland

by Greg May
(Orlando, FL)

Greg May says: My love affair with Marineland of Florida began in 1965. Every year, my parents would take me up there.

I would look forward to those visits more than Christmas morning. There was always something new! Going to Marineland was like stepping back into time.

The show never really changed. The Top Deck show featuring the Jumping Porpoises was truly the longest-running show in history ever since 1938!

I was fascinated by the arches that criss-crossed over the tanks, the freshwater porpoises and Kay, the Pilot whale. Kay set a longevity record for her species in captivity - 11 years.

In 2005 I made my 100th visit up there. Fox News televised it.

Shortly after my visits, the bulldozers arrived. When they demolished Marineland they destroyed a part of Florida's past.
