Old Dixie Highway In Southeast Florida

by Dave Michaels
(North Miami, Florida)

In the old days Dixie Highway came down the east coast of Florida and it usually was parallel to the railroad tracks. Finally, US-1 became the major federal highway down the coast.

In some locations US-1 is called Dixie Highway, other places it's called Federal Highway.

In some places, Old Dixie Highway still exists. It is usually west of US-1 and runs along the railroad tracks. Many old commercial buildings and active light industrial areas are now along this route. It's a peaceful drive on a weekend; during the work week it's a little busy.

An example of Old Dixie Highway is from Aventura north to Hollywood Boulevard. Some of this stretch is on the east side of the tracks, some on the west side. When you get to Hollywood Boulevard you can continue north on same route to Sheridan Road, part of it North 21st Avenue and the rest called Dixie Highway.

Here is a map to help you find your way.
