Lake Weir is a beautiful body of water not too far from The Villages Florida. It is a popular boating and swimming attraction.
The area attracted national attention back in 1935 when the FBI cornered Ma Barker and her "killer brood" near the village of Ocklawaha. Ma and her gang of robbers included her own sons. The feds killed the killer brood.
In addition to Ocklawaha, other towns around Lake Weir include East Lake Weir and Weirsdale.
Lake Weir is near the southern boundary of the Ocala National Forest.
Gator Joe's is a popular waterfront restaurant in Ocklawaha. Lots of people from The Villages go there and mingle with the Old Florida locals.
The Lake Weir yacht club is near East Lake Weir and was founded in 1909. It is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Another interesting structure that used to be a schoolhouse is in Weirsdale. The old school building is now known as the Orange Blossom Opry, and attracts a lot of people from The Villages Florida and surrounding towns for country music concerts.
The roads around the shoreline of Lake Weir offer some great scenery, including thousands of acres of citrus groves.
