DELAND, FLORIDA: COWBOY HAT FINANCES UNIVERSITY
DeLand is a town west of Daytona Beach. It is a city of many firsts. It was visited in 1876 by Henry Addison DeLand, a baking soda magnate from New York. He later brought in his friend John B. Stetson to help him save the town when financial problems came along.
A devastating fire nearly wiped out the town in 1886. This led to an ordinance requiring all new structures be built with masonry instead of wood frame. Thanks to this building code, no less than 68 historic sites can be found within the few hundred acres of historic DeLand.
The town is also loaded with great murals on downtown buildings and walls. Many of the murals portray events in DeLand's historic past. In the early days, the town fathers paid residents to plant oaks in front of their houses. This effort paid off in one of the prettiest little tree canopied townS in Florida.
RECOMMENDED DELAND RESTAURANT
Shady Oak Restaurant
2984 West New York Avenue
DeLand, Florida 32720
DeLand has many fine restaurants in the downtown area. Shady Oaks was chosen not because it has the greatest food in town, but because of its location on the St. Johns River and Old Florida fish camp feel. The food is good, but the view is better.

February has some cold snaps and actual freezing weather once
in a rare while. January was warmer than usual, but we had a cold snap toward the end of the month and actually turned on the heat in our homes and cars. Most of our snowbirds have come back, so the lines are longer at the attractions and restaurants. Sometimes it's even too cold to eat outside.
