MERRITT ISLAND, FLORIDA
Unique Past, Present, and Future
Merritt Island is located about 50 miles east of Orlando between the mainland and Cocoa Beach barrier island in Central East Florida. It is between New Smyrna Beach and Melbourne and is a unique place, unlike any other in Florida.
It is actually a peninsula that extends south for 62 miles from the mainland just south of Oak Hill to its tip, known locally as Dragon Point for the sculpture which one resided there.
Merritt Island View to the South
The island is a combination of Old Florida, Modern Florida, and Future Florida.
Is is home to Kennedy Space Center, the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge, and many modern subdivisions that were created to meet the huge housing demand caused by the moon landing program in the 1960s and earlier.
