My grandfather's family immigrated from France in the 1700's.

Two brothers with their families frst arrived in the Carolinas. One went north and the other brought his family first to Georgia, Alabama and north Florida then to Alachua Florida.

In the 1840s Daniel Gillett established a community: Gillette FL. An E was added to the town name although not known why. It was there one Gillett was shot in the head and killed while sitting in his rocking on his front porch during the Seminole Indian war.

The chair still bears the mark of the musket ball that that caused his fatal injury The chair has been on exhibit at the Gamble mansion in Ellenton, Florida. The same chair has also been on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution.

They made there living in cattle ranching, fishing and citrus. My grandfather Arthur Alonso Gillett. was a cowboy...a true Florida Cracker.
