Indian River Lagoon

One bit of trivia. While my older sister was a teacher at Rockledge High School in the early days of the space program, she dated a launch pad engineer who lived in a beach house they referred to as The Pad.
Ron Jon's Surf Shop now sits on that site.
The Banana River was witness to some pretty wild missile mishaps, including one missile which was doing cartwheels up the Banana River until they had it self-destruct. There was also one which lifted a few feet off the concrete pad, then sat back down and exploded. There was nothing left but the concrete pad and a large amount of scrap metal.
Anyone who has followed the space program knows why everyone involved cheers madly whenever a launch is successful. Success is never a given.
