Mr. Newell wrote a wonderful book about the Withlacoochee area of Florida. It was titled "If Nothin' Don't Happen".
The book features the adventures of a Florida Cracker family as they range through the wilds of this part of Florida from "The Hammock" to the Gulf. He is a master of recreating the old Florida dialect.
The book was published in 1974.
David M. Newell lived most of his life in Leesburg, Florida, some 50 miles east of the Gulf Hammock area he writes about. His career included being the editor of Field and Stream magazine, Sports Afield, and a special correspondent for the New York Times.
