SPENCER

by Robert Lee Proudfoot
(Tampa)

William Samuel Spencer, my great great great great great grandfather moved to what is now Palma Ceia from South Georgia before 1830.

He was Sheriff of Hillsborough County before and during the Civil War. All three of his sons served in the Confederate military.

Thomas Kennedy Spencer Sr, his youngest son, is my gggg grandfather. He served in the 4th Florida Infantry and the Cow Cavalry. His family also ran the newspaper in Tampa, which he was left to run after his brothers died.

He then went on to become Sheriff of Hillsborough county, where his son , T K Spencer, Jr. also served. T K hired the first black deputy in Hillsborough County.

Many of his descendants still reside in Tampa. Before my family came to Florida, they moved to Georgia in 1754.
