Geneva, Florida Things To Do, Lodging, Dining, & Real Estate At End Of Article

For more than 60 years I have driven lonely State Road 46 from Mims to Sanford and vice versa.  I always enjoy stopping for a visit when I pass through Geneva, the only settlement along that route.

Although part of the Orlando metropolitan region, Geneva feels far removed from urban Central Florida.  With a population of 3,654, large oak trees, horse farms, fishing camps, and quiet country roads dominate the landscape.

GENEVA, FLORIDA HISTORY

The Geneva area has been inhabited for thousands of years. Archaeological discoveries near the St. Johns River show that Native American groups lived in the region long before European settlement.

The Timucua people occupied much of Central Florida before the arrival of Europeans, and later the Seminole people used the forests and waterways around Geneva for hunting, fishing, and travel.

The Geneva Historical Society notes that pottery fragments dating back centuries have been found near the area.

Naturalist William Bartram traveled through the region in 1765 and again in 1776 while exploring Florida’s rivers and wilderness. His writings described the beauty of the St. Johns River and the untouched wilderness surrounding present-day Geneva.

Permanent settlement increased after Florida became a United States territory in 1821. During the 1800s, pioneer families moved into the Geneva area to farm, raise cattle, harvest timber, and operate river-related businesses.

Some Russian immigrant families also settled in the area. One notable settler was Progar Debogory, who donated land for both the Geneva Cemetery and the community’s first school.

Life in early Geneva was difficult. Settlers dealt with mosquitoes, flooding, poor roads, and isolation from larger towns. Families relied heavily on farming, cattle, hunting, and river transportation.

By the late 1800s, Geneva had become a modest agricultural community with schools, churches, and small businesses serving local residents.

A Personal Memory of Geneva, Florida

I have long been a Civil War buff and learned something bizarre about Lewis Thornton Powell, one of the people convicted in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.  Powell was hanged, and buried. Somehow his skull was missing from his body. Many years later, in 1994, the skull was located and returned to family descendants in Geneva. It is buried next to his mother in the Geneva Cemetery.

GENEVA, FLORIDA TODAY

Despite the growth of nearby Orlando and Sanford during the twentieth century, Geneva retained much of its rural character.

Residents worked hard to preserve the community’s history and natural beauty, helping Geneva avoid the heavy suburban development seen elsewhere in Central Florida.

Today Geneva remains one of the quietest and most rural communities in Seminole County. Many residents enjoy large properties, horseback riding, fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation.

The area attracts people looking for a slower pace of life away from traffic and crowded suburbs.

The community does not have large shopping districts or chain commercial development. Instead, Geneva offers locally owned businesses, country stores, restaurants, and outdoor recreation areas.

Visitors looking for upscale shopping malls or art districts usually travel to nearby Oviedo, Sanford, or Orlando.

Geneva appeals strongly to people who enjoy fish camps, country stores, and authentic Old Florida scenery.

Popular local businesses include Geneva General Store, a longtime community gathering place, and Jolly Gator Fish Camp, a classic riverside fish camp restaurant on the St. Johns River.

History lovers often visit Museum of Geneva History to learn about pioneer life in the region. Nearby Oviedo also offers antique stores such as The Coop Antiques for visitors interested in vintage shopping and collectibles.

Geneva is not a tourist town in the traditional sense. Instead, it appeals to travelers who appreciate quiet back roads, old fish camps, river scenery, and a glimpse of Central Florida before massive growth transformed much of the state.

THE UPSCALE SEMINOLE WOODS COMMUNITY

Seminole Woods is an upscale gated community of the south side of Geneva. The development has a secluded country-style atmosphere.

The community is known for its heavily wooded lots, custom homes, and emphasis on privacy. Many of the homes sit on relatively large parcels compared with suburban subdivisions closer to Orlando.

Residents are attracted to the area because it still retains much of the “Old Florida” landscape — tall pines, palmettos, oak hammocks, and nearby wetlands.

The homes in Seminole Woods are upscale on very large lots.  Many of the homes are worth more than a million dollars.
