Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is one of Florida’s most enchanting historic landmarks.
Located on the edge of Biscayne Bay in the Coconut Grove neighborhood of Miami, Vizcaya was once the winter estate of businessman James Deering.
Today, it serves as a museum offering visitors a glimpse into a bygone era of elegance and Old World craftsmanship. The property includes a lavish Mediterranean Revival villa, formal European-inspired gardens, and native forest.
Surrounded by lush landscaping and beautiful water views, Vizcaya provides a peaceful retreat just minutes from the bustle of downtown Miami.
Construction of Vizcaya began in 1914 and continued into the early 1920s. James Deering, heir to the International Harvester fortune, hired a team of renowned architects and designers to bring his vision to life.
Architect F. Burrall Hoffman designed the villa, artist and designer Paul Chalfin directed the overall aesthetic, and landscape architect Diego Suarez created the extensive gardens.
The villa was filled with European antiques, art, and architectural elements dating back centuries, many of which were shipped directly from Italy and France.
Vizcaya was completed in 1922 and served as Deering’s winter home until his death in 1925.
In the decades that followed, the estate survived hurricanes, neglect, and development pressures before becoming a public museum in 1953. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994.
Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is located at 3251 South Miami Avenue in Coconut Grove. It is open to the public Wednesday through Monday, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and is closed on Tuesdays, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance online, especially during weekends and peak season.
The main house and gardens require a fair amount of walking, often on uneven surfaces, so comfortable shoes and sun protection are recommended.
Photography is allowed in most areas, although flash and tripods are restricted inside the house.
