Whidden’s Marina, located in Boca Grande, Florida, is a historic waterfront site. Founded in 1926, it serves boaters and anglers in the Tarpon Capital of the World.
The marina offers docking, fishing charters, and a glimpse of Old Florida. The Gasparilla Island Maritime Museum, housed on-site, showcases local history. It’s a nice excursion for those exploring Boca Grande’s charm.
Sam Whidden established the marina in 1926. It started as a nightspot, dance hall, and restaurant. The Whidden family has operated it ever since.
During the 1930s, it was a social hub with a jukebox and soft-shell crab lunches. After Sam’s death in 1978, his daughters, Isabelle and Barbara, ran the marina.
They preserved his legacy despite rising property values. In 2000, Whidden’s Marina joined the National Register of Historic Places. The Gasparilla Island Maritime Museum, opened later, honors the family’s contributions.
In February 2025 the marina was listed for sale at $17.5 million and is still listed as of May 2025.
Whidden’s Marina is at 190 1st Street East, Boca Grande, Florida 33921. It operates daily from 8 am to 8 pm. Visitors can rent boats or book fishing charters for tarpon, snook, or redfish.
The marina has slips for various boat sizes and a boat ramp. Check the website for docking reservations. The museum is open during marina hours; tours are available.
Bring sunscreen and water. Nearby dining includes The Loose Caboose for sandwiches or South Beach Bar & Grille for Gulf views.
