WHERE IS WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA

Winter Springs is a city in Seminole County in central Florida, within the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. It is located about 15 miles northeast of downtown Orlando.

It is on the southern shore of Lake Jesup, a large shallow lake connected to the St. Johns River system.

Winter Springs is bisected or bounded by several significant roads. State Road 434 runs east–west through the city.

The Cross Seminole Trail for bikes and hikers also follows part of an old railroad right-of-way through the area.

The town is not directly on an interstate highway, but major highways and arterials nearby link it to the greater Orlando area.

The population of Winter Springs is 38,342.

WINTER SPRINGS, FLORIDA HISTORY

The region that now includes Winter Springs was part of the broader territory used by indigenous peoples. The area was probably influenced by pre-Columbian Native American cultures in central Florida and, later, by Seminole tribes.

Florida’s colonial era saw shifting control—from Spanish to British and back to Spanish, before U.S. acquisition in 1821. In the early 19th century, a merchant from New York, Moses Levy, held much of the land that would become Winter Springs.

Moses Levy was the father of Florida Senator and businessman David Levy Yulee.

In the mid-to-late 19th century, the area was known as “Tuskawilla.” As settlers arrived, they engaged in typical pioneer agricultural enterprises—grazing, small farms, timber, turpentine and lumber, as was common in central Florida.

By 1959, the community was formally incorporated under the name “City of North Orlando.” Because of confusion (it was not contiguous with Orlando), the name was changed to Winter Springs in 1972.

At its incorporation, the population was modest (less than 600 at incorporation) and the area largely rural or low density.

I lived in Orlando at the time of Winter Springs incorporation.  Walt Disney World had just opened, and this "new" town was so small most of us paid no attention to it.

Over the following decades, as the Orlando metropolitan region expanded, Winter Springs evolved from a rural-to-suburban community. Residential development, roads, and retail infrastructure gradually shaped it into a commuter suburb.
