HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The park began as part of Eglin Air Force Base’s bombing range during World War II. After the war, Colonel Fred Gannon, a local conservationist, helped preserve the land.

The state leased it from the U.S. Forest Service in 1966, creating the park. Named for Gannon, it honors his efforts to protect the area’s pine forests and bayou.

Native American middens, from ancient inhabitants, are scattered throughout.
