Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park in Niceville, Florida covers 357 acres along Rocky Bayou.
It offers hiking, camping, fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. The park has three nature trails, a campground, and a boat ramp.
Visitors can paddle, bike, or picnic by the bayou. It’s a quiet spot to explore the Florida Panhandle’s natural beauty or learn to kayak.
The park began as part of Eglin Air Force Base’s bombing range during World War II. After the war, Colonel Fred Gannon, a local conservationist, helped preserve the land.
The state leased it from the U.S. Forest Service in 1966, creating the park. Named for Gannon, it honors his efforts to protect the area’s pine forests and bayou.
Native American middens, from ancient inhabitants, are scattered throughout.
Fred Gannon Rocky Bayou State Park is at 4281 State Road 20, Niceville, FL 32578. It’s open daily from 8 AM to sunset.
The campground has been closed for construction from July 2024 until further notice; call (850) 833-9144 for updates.
Restrooms and showers in the day-use area are also closed for maintenance as of December 31, 2024.
Kayak and canoe rentals are available at the ranger station. Three trails - Sand Pine, Red Cedar, and Rocky Bayou - total 3.3 miles.
Pets are allowed on leashes. Check their website for events like Pioneer Day in November.
