HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

George Adderley, a Black Bahamian immigrant, arrived in the Keys in 1890. He married Olivia in 1896. In 1902, they bought 32 acres on Key Vaca for $100.

George built the house using tabby, a mix of burnt shells, ash, sand, and water. He worked as a sponger, turtler, and charcoal maker, sailing to Key West to sell goods.

A small community, Adderley Town, grew around them with five to ten homes. George served as an Episcopal lay preacher. The 1906 railroad survey noted ten houses.

Residents secured a flag stop, Station Vaca, when the railroad was built for easier Key West access. The Adderleys sold the land in 1949 to Francis and Mary Crane. Olivia died in 1950.

George moved to Key West. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
