HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Built in 1798, Kingsley Plantation was home to Zephaniah Kingsley, a slave trader and planter, and his wife, Anna Madgigine Jai, a former slave from Senegal.

Kingsley freed Anna in 1811, and she later managed the plantation and owned land and slaves.

The plantation grew Sea Island cotton, sugarcane, and other crops using the labor of about 60 enslaved people.

When Florida became a U.S. territory in 1821, restrictive racial laws threatened the Kingsley family’s status. They moved to Haiti in the 1830s to escape these laws.

The plantation reflects the harsh realities of slavery and the unique story of the Kingsley family.
