Located on the west shore of small scenic Lake Starr in Lake Wales, Florida, the Lake of the Hills Community Club stands as a cherished landmark of community spirit and historical significance.
Established in the early 20th century, this quaint stucco building has long served as a central gathering place for residents and visitors alike.
Its picturesque setting and enduring legacy make it a must-visit destination for those exploring Central Florida's rich cultural tapestry.
The origins of the Lake of the Hills Community Club trace back to 1914 when land developer W.J. Howey bought land around Lake Starr and envisioned a communal space for the Lake Wales community.
He sold lots and local residents built a pavilion on what is now the current site of the Club. The pavilion was destroyed over the years by storms
By 1927, local residents came together to construct the current clubhouse, coinciding with the dedication of the nearby Bok Tower Gardens by President Calvin Coolidge.
Over the decades, the club has hosted countless social events, potluck dinners, and community meetings, solidifying its role as a cornerstone of local heritage.
In recognition of its historical and cultural importance, the clubhouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 24, 2000.
As a side note, W. J. Howey later moved to Lake County, Florida and developed the town of Howey-in-the-Hills.
Located at 47 East Starr Avenue, Lake Wales, FL 33898, the Lake of the Hills Community Club is easily accessible to visitors.
While specific visiting hours may vary depending on scheduled events, the clubhouse is often open to the public during community gatherings and special occasions.
For those interested in hosting private events, the venue offers rental opportunities, providing a charming lakeside setting for weddings, parties, and meetings.
